Between 1995 and 1999 Neil Roberts (1954-2002) produced several series of “bounce drawings”, in which pigment was transferred to paper by smearing a variety of balls with boot polish and bouncing them hundreds of times onto sheets of paper placed on the floor. He often described this very physical activity and the results as bruising. By contrast, these “bounce monotypes” with their vibrant pink on soft tissue and energetic marks created by a ping-pong ball suggest kissing.
